Photoshop Workshop *3 Continued

Opacity
This is the opacity tab you can use this to make an image see through if you want to show an image behind it.

Blending options

These are the blending options with these you can change how your image looks such as multiply which will double the channels therfor making the image darker this is one of the most used blending modes in photoshop

This image is using the blending mode screen which is part of the lighten catagory and usually lightens the image to about the same brightness as the screen you are using. this is also one of the most used blending modes in photoshop

Liquify

This is how to use the liquify tool it is under the filters tab it allows you to edit things about a persons appearance like making someone fatter or thinner it is mainly used by fashion photographers to make a person better looking. personally i don't like using this tool.

An Example of Liquify

This is an example of what the liquify tool can do im not sure that most photographers would do this and even if they did they would do it to a better standard than mine. it could also be used as a surrealist type of art

Clone Stamp
This is the clone stamp tool it is used to get rid of any imperfections in a photograph

This is an example of an image without the clone stamp tool

An image that is using the clone stamp tool  to get rid of spots/blemishes

Photoshop Workshop *3

Brightness/Contrast

you use brightness and contrast to make a photo brighter or darker. or you can use it to lighten and darken the colours of the image

Changing the options
i changed the brightness of this image down to make it more clear this darkened the sky and revealed more details in the image i really like this image i like the sense of distance that it has
Layers

this is an example of layers as you can see in the image only the bottom layer is visable i did this using the eye tool just next to the layer you can use this to view your images before and after editing to make decisions on what you have to do

This is the second layer that i have made visable i deleted alex's face creating a mask i'm going to use this to add another image in the shape of this mask
this is the finished image and i quite like it apart from the edges of the mask that i need to soften

Floating Image with Photoshop Comparison of editing style

Final Image

David Hockney

David Hockney created a series of images called the joiners which were small polaroid photos arranged into one composite piece. because these images were taken at different times the images play with your mind because there is something that your eye cannot focus on David Hockney created many of these from landscapes to portraits using this Joiner style.

My images in this sytle

I Have tried to do two images in this style the first one i think works better than the other because it is more visually appealing and interesting. it isnt on the same scale as david hockneys which uses many more pictures than mine and since mine is one image split into 3 it isn't as good.

The David Hockney example that i have put up is in color while mine are in black and white with a black border but i think both work well and i don't think i could say one or the other is more visually appealing.

David Hockneys images are part of a series while mine are just single images split into many different parts.
Also His images are small polaroid images combined together to make one photography while mine is alot bigger and could be scaled up to an A3 print size if it was needed to be.

David Hockneys images aren't manipulated in any way other than putting them down on paper to create the composition they were taken at different times to play with the eye. while mine were converted to black and white with adobe lightroom 3.3 and a vignette was added aswell. then it was brought into photoshop and split into 3 then borders were added.

Our images differ in Subject but they both share the same principal of it being one image split into different pieces.

Photoshop Workshop 2* Continued

Rotating the Canvas
If i wanted this image landscape instead of Portrait i would use these tools and rotate it clockwise by 90 degrees

Adding a grid to the image

If i wanted a more precise way of keeping two images together i would use the grid these overlays the photoshop document with a grid that i can match up my image to to create perfect size and scale

View of Image with the grid overlay

this is the grid view as you can see it shows where parts of the image are not aligned right so it will be easy to correct

Adding a border to images

to add a border to images you go to fill>Stroke from here you can select how many pixels your border is and what color it will  be you can also select if you want whether you want the border to be on the inside of the image or the outside of the image

The History Tools

This is the history Toolbar it shows you what you have done to your document and if you want you can click on the different points to go back it only remembers so many actions so if you keep on adding things it will remove earlier parts of the history and you wont be able to go back to them

Layers

This is the layers toolbar from here you can create new layers over your image so you dont have to edit the base image think of it as a layer of cling film over the image you can delete any layers you dont like and it wont effect the base image if you just want to hide a layer for abit while you work you can click the little eye tool. you can create black and white layers over your image that you can change the blending mode on to create darker or lighter images you could also duplicate an image from the layers tab when you have a layer selected it will only effect that layer and nothing else. you can flatten an image to turn it all into one image when you have finished it.

Photoshop Workshop *2

Paper Type
File>New>International paper from here you can select all the different international paper sizes like A1 A2 A3 A4 A5

Paper Size
From here you can change the name of your document and the paper size from here i am using the size A4 because it is a standard print size and a resolution of 300 because any higher for a standard A4 print isn't necessary

Adding Images to the canvas
From here i dragged and dropped my images into the photoshop A4 document this image was as big as the canvas so i decided to shrink the image down

Changing the image scale
Using the shift key to lock the axis so all of the image will move at the same time i shrank the image down to a more useful size that i can work with then i pressed enter to say i have finished scaling my image because if you leave the transform tools open you cant do any other actions through photoshop

Photoshop Workshop *1

(Renaming Image Files)
Double clicking gently and slowly on an image allows you to edit an images name you can also use adobe photoshops save as feature to change this.

(Image Type)

Saving as a .jpg is fine for printing test images and web uploading but there is a loss of quality from resaving an image
Saving as a .PSD is a good way of saving images for final pieces and it saves all the layers you have edited too but the filesize can increase dramatically a small .jpg image after being edited and saved through photoshop can reach 24mb or higher.

(Image Size/Resolution)
Image size all depends on what you need it for.
Resolution 72/150 is fine for printing because you don't need any more detail.

for final images that will be printed at a much higher resolution use around 300

after changing the resolution of an image if you decide to change back you will lose alot of quality that the image used to have because it stretches the pixels and colour data is lost
